Lockyer District High School is able to offer students from both urban
and rural backgrounds the opportunity to acquire skills that are needed in the
agricultural industry.
Students have the opportunity to study in the Agricultural
field while in Junior Secondary. The
curriculum in grade 9 and 10 includes history of agriculture, cattle
production, the soil environment, poultry, aquaponics and hydroponics, farming
as a business and animal/plant anatomy and physiology. Students are involved in both theoretical and
practical (hands-on) learning experiences.
Once in the Senior School, students have many options in the
Agricultural area of study. Agricultural Science allows the students to study
the science and technology behind food and fibre production as well as look at
the challenges agriculture faces in the future.
Agricultural Practices (SAS) is a more practical based subject looking
at the hands on side of agriculture, with students studying a range of topics
from farm maintenance to marketing crops.
LDHS has links with Gatton Vocational Education Centre
(G-VEC) at UQ Gatton which allows students the opportunity to study a
Certificate II or III in Rural Operations or Agriculture (depending on the year).
Students are also given the opportunity to attend the Ag
Inspirations program, which is run by an external party to expose students to
the range of agricultural based activities based in the Lockyer Valley.
