Welcome to the August edition of Lockyerlife for 2016.  Thank you for taking the time to read this edition, as we believe that our newsletter forms an important part of home/school communication.

Lockyer District High School has received some welcome acknowledgements for great student effort in the past couple of weeks. Some of these include:

  • Elisha Neave Memorial Award for commitment to River Run 100
  • State Junior Secondary Champions in Robotics at 2016 State Championships
  • Regional winners, highest fundraisers World’s Greatest Shave
  • Regional winners and second place (years 7 and 8) Literacy Planet – Word Mania

All of these events provide excellent leadership activities for our students. They show a commitment to excellence as well as a commitment to community involvement. In conjunction with the recent Sports Tour to Tasmania we are providing a broad range of learning experiences for many hundreds of students.

In House news, congratulations to Kenny House for their success at the 2016 Athletics Carnival. The results were amazingly close, with relay results determining overall success. There were more than 840 students at the carnival, clearly showing that the carnival is an excellent school day. In the same vein, congratulations to Cunningham House, most attending house Semester 1 2016 as well as smartest overall house, with the highest aggregated results across all year levels on Semester 1 2016 report cards. These results indicate that it is difficult to learn if you are not at school. Every day counts!

Congratulations to the 300 students (that’s one third of the school) who attended the 100% and 98% attenders BBQ. This is our best result ever. Our current whole-school attendance rate is 91%, up from 87% only 3 years ago. It is important that students come to school, it is after all, a very exciting and good place to be.

I recently opened the LDHS Art Exhibition held at the Lockyer Valley Cultural Centre. Thanks to the Lockyer Valley Regional Council and staff for their support. The artworks are beautiful and the exhibition is an artistic triumph! Well done to all of the student artists who have their work presented and the staff members who help students do their very best.

I remain very proud of the students and staff at Lockyer.  Together, we have a good school, the school of choice in the Lockyer Valley.  Let’s all work together to continue to improve in everything we do.
